Spring Cleanup

Spring Cleanup will start Monday, April 6 with greatly Reduced Staffing due to CDC and NYS guidelines for the Covid-19 pandemic.

NO Loose Leaf Collection this year. Place leaves in biodegradable paper bags/reusable barrels up to 32 gallons/50 pounds maximum. Leaf vacuuming is extremely dusty, so our crews must wear safety masks. We are prioritizing masks for our police and emergency responders, not leaf vacuuming.

We are still collecting stacked brush (cut to 4 ft. lengths maximum, stacked neatly, no more than 3 ft. tall) and waste lumber/wood items (approx. 300 lbs/week max.).

However, with minimal staffing this will be a much slower process, and we will not be adhering to a normal weekly brush pickup schedule.

NOTE: The Compost Facility IS NOW OPEN Tues. – Sat. 8 AM – 4 PM for residents and Town businesses to drop off yard waste/bagged or loose leaves, and for residents to shovel compost. However, we have minimal staffing currently. Please be patient, and practice safe social distancing while there.

NOTE 2: There is currently a BURNING BAN which prohibits outdoor burning. Burning of leaves, garbage, treated lumber and certain other materials is always prohibited by NYS law: https://www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/58519.html

Truck Dumping Brush
Spring cleanup starts late March and ends late April.  This event helps residents dispose of many wood items. Acceptable items include:
  • Yard waste (leaves, grass clippings, etc.) raked loose to curbside, placed in biodegradable paper bags or in reusable containers
  • Brush and branches cut to a maximum of 4 feet in length stacked neatly no more than 3 feet tall
  • Wood fencing
  • Waste wood or lumber - no more than 300 lbs / week maximum
  • Wood bed frames (no mattresses, no box springs)
  • Wood lawn furniture (no cushions)
  • Wood storm windows
No single container shall be over 32 gallons or 50 pounds.
The town is not responsible for broken or damaged containers.
Wooden items are collected as a convenience for spring clean-up. This is NOT designed for large quantities such as major renovation projects.

Truck by Pile of Brush
Unacceptable items include garbage or trash, clearing of vacant lots, any metal or plastic objects, appliances, televisions, upholstered furniture, mattresses, rugs, tires, batteries, motor oil, fuels, propane tanks, barrels, drums, stumps, sod, pet waste, paints, pesticides, wood preservatives, and debris left by private contractors.

Yard waste must be placed in reusable containers or paper bags* or piled neatly along the sides of the road, not so high or so wide as to obstruct roadways or line of sight and not in the roadway itself.

Placing debris in the roadway constitutes a violation of the Vehicle and Traffic Law as well as creates a hazardous situation for pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular traffic. Please make sure that storm sewer inlets are also kept clean of leaves and branches to ensure proper drainage.

The Town no longer sells paper yard waste bags; they are available for comparable prices at many local businesses including Phillips Hardware, Hannaford, Price Chopper, Curtis Lumber, Stewarts, Lowes, Walmart and more.
